Bandsaw Box

Bandsaw boxes are made using the .... bandsaw!

Bandsaw boxes are totally unlike any other box construction technique. Rather than making a box by assembling sides, a top and a back, a bandsaw box is made by cutting out the desired shape from a large block of wood. Generally, this means you can create very unusual shapes and in fact curves are easier to cut then straight lines and sharp corners (although depending on your design that might be possible as well).

  1. Step 1
    Create a design
You will need to make your bandsaw box design. On a piece of paper, try sketching what your box will look like including drawers and outline. Make sure not to make it too complicated (maximum 3 drawers). It is best to make a scale drawing of the front view of your box. You will also need to decide how deep the box will be. Make sure to show your design to Mr. Hogg to make check if it looks possible.
  2. Step 2
Make a blank (block of wood)
You will make a blank out of either plywood layers or pine board layers. Determine how many layers you need to get the depth of the box you want. Cut those layers and then laminate (glue) them together. Allow blank to dry overnight.
  3. Step 3
    Cut outline on bandsaw
Trace your design outline on the top of the blank. You can use carbon paper under your design sketch and trace with a tracing tool. Cut the outline of the box on the bandsaw (check with Mr. Hogg first!).
  4. Step 4
    Sanding and More Cutting...
Depending on the design, you will need to do several steps to cut out the drawers, and add backs and fronts to the drawers. The exact order of the steps will depend on the details of your design.
  5. Step 5
    Sanding and Staining or Painting
Once your box is complete and WELL sanded, you can finish it with stain or paint.
